Bowls 110th Anniversary

The 15th July 1905 was the date that WG Grace – an accomplished bowler – played Cricket for London County against Purley.  So the Bowls committee decided to invite all sectors of Purley Sports Club to a Bowls match on the 15th July, 2015 – 110 years later.

Our guests included representatives from the Trustees, Directors, Management, Staff, Cricket, Squash, Tennis, Past Bowls captains and some ‘Lifers’.  We played ‘Triples’ – 3 in a team, each with

3 bowls – under a bowls Skip.

It was a great afternoon – highly competitive, but played in great spirit – and at times hilarious!

Afterwards we celebrated with a 3 course dinner beautifully organised by Dee and Lorraine and included donated wine on the table.

Howard Marsh, Men’s Captain, proposed a 110th toast, and recounted some interesting tales from yesteryear re both Bowls and Club.

Lady Captain, Elizabeth Fry, then organised a very entertaining prize giving.

Each Skip awarded a special prize – which included a gold medal for our wonderful groundsman, Brian Finn, a bag of humbugs for Butch Manning, and finally a starter bowls pack for the club Chairman John Roe (a bowl, a left shoe – flat-soled – and a rather dog-mangled bowls club tie!).

A great inter-section day!

And a great opportunity for a party!

110th Bowl’s Anniversary:

The Men’s Bowls section commemorated their 110th Anniversary by challenging the Sports Club to a bowls match on 15th July , being the date W G Grace is known to have been on site playing cricket, the date he visited the bowls green is now lost .
With refreshments supplied by Andy Sugarman, the sections, Trustees, Life Members and staff battled the Bowls section and a very competitive match ensued with much hilarity on both sides.

The laughter continued at the dinner held afterwards. Thanks to all who attended and helped make it such a memorable Day for the Bowls section.
